Another one of those unique Brighton gems. A huge amount of space is taken up with royal memorabilia, with a particular emphasis on Dianna and a piano that breaks out into showtunes at random intervals. Open the menu and you are presented with two pages of tea room etiquette which are strictly enforced by the stern looking proprietor.

The portions of cakes and tea are generous and you will come out feeling close to a sugar and tannin overdose. Taste-wise, they are nothing to write home about but who cares! This is experience dining after all.

The best time to go is on a Sunday. Make sure you're seated and served by 4pm as that's when you have to stand for the National Anthem.

This place was recommended by a friend and being a lover of afternoon tea I had to see this place on my next trip to Brighton.what a great place! We happened to be so lucky to be there on a Sunday afternoon at around 4.00 pm. On the dot at 4 o'clock all guests were asked to rise to the national anthem.which was then followed by Liza's Cabaret.
Wonderfully quirky, bizarre, kitsch-laden, Diana-loving and fun! This place plays the best camp music and offers the best tea selection. Definitely a must-see!

Came here with a friend for afternoon tea. This is a very lovely place. Our afternoon tea came with cheese sandwiches, salmon sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches, cakes, two scones, and Yorkshire tea. Everything was delicious, especially the scones and the jam. Although it was a little on the pricey side (more than 20 pounds in total), it was a very nice late brunch.

Update: after having afternoon tea in London, I realized the price of what I got here was absolutely a bargain! Although the afternoon tea here might not be as extensive and delicate as the ones i had in london, this was a real bargain.

The sign outside this tea shop on George Street reads: Street girls bringing sailors onto the hotel must pay for the room in advance. How very different to the home life of our own dear Queen.

This place is kitsch and fun; it is also ceremonious and unsmiling a bit like the Royal Family itself. The place is small so book in advance to be sure of a table and be prepared to see the ironic side of paying good money for standard fare.

A tribute to the late Princess of Wales reads: Born a Princess, Died a Queen. I can think of a few Brightonians this applies to.

I like my tea like I like my women,
      comfortably warm.

      I was satisfied.

However I'm keeping it safe with a three star rating, taking such risks is a dangerous way to live your life. Never take me for a fool.
      You fool.

      Reg,
      Monty

p.s. Before you query, Qype insisted that we should 'write as if you were talking to a good friend (in front of your mother)'.

I love this place!! The tea and biscuits are generous and very elegantly served by the lovely guy with (on this day) silver eye shadow and acerbic quick wit. Don't come here is you want a run of the mill tea shop experience - do come here is you want a taste of the eccentric and for some fantastic food - with incredibly generous helpings, this is a really unique place well suited to the Brighton I know and love!

After reading all the reviews on Qype and elsewhere, I decided to give this place a try. Upon arrival I was given a warm welcome by a charming lady whom I assume was the owner or his partner. I was surprised to learn that they now serve coffee as I had learned that this was definitely not on the menu under the previous owner. Along with this, I had a piece of Carrot cake which, I was told, was homemade on the premises and I could believe it as it tasted delicious and fresh. It was rather expensive £4-95 but well worth it.
But it's the surroundings which make this place so unusual and worth a visit. It has the sense of going back in time to a more genteel society when etiquette and good manners were the order of the day.
The place is stuffed from top to bottom with Royal pictures and memorabilia and you get a feeling that the person who designed all this had a particular liking for Princess Diana
There is a steep step at the door which makes this place difficult for people in wheelchairs and for those like me who have a walking disability.

A totally OTT place which adds a lot of fun. The decor is totally Royal!
The tea menu is names after various members of the household.
One special tea is the regular Vicars tea party.
All in all well worth a visit.

Ok. I was poised to write a scathng review based on a visit to this establishment last April. I wanted to write it up as it has annoyed me since. Every time I pass this tea shop I feel cross. However I see it has been taken over by new management so I will take the advice of the last reviewer and reserve my comments until I visit it again and can compare the experiences. I hope to find it better as I love the idea and campness of what should be a must on any tour of Brighton.

Having walked by the entrance of this place several times, I was intrigued. All the kitschy British stuff drew me in. I went with a few friends and was impressed with their selection of choices. I went with the pot of tea and 2 scones and was very happy. A friend of mine had a cucumber tea sandwich and wasn't that excited by it, but we all agreed the scones were divine! Warm, soft, rich flavor, even better with a giant pot of clotted cream and jam. We spent around 2 hours just chatting and enjoying the place. I will definitely go back!
