Le Bec Rouge

We went to Le Bec Rouge for dinner last night, staying over in Paris in Montparnasse for three days on the slow way back from Italy to the States. It's been several years since we last ate here, but the simple and satisfying Alsatian fare hasn't really changed much. Prices are quite reasonable by Parisian standards, and service is consistent with the familiar nature of the locale. They still have an awesome selection of wines, too. We had foie gras, sauerkraut, coquelin with mashed potatoes and broccoli, and a generous charcuterie as well. Dessert was crème glace au chocolat, infused with several kinds of pepper...As a confirmed aficionado of frozen desserts in general and chocolate in particular, I can say without hesitation that this was, for me, the highlight of the evening!

Came here because of positive reviews re: food and service, even to Americans.

The food was good. We had foie gras, sea bass, and ribs. (The ribs were too salty but the foie gras was on point.)

But the abysmal service of the owner ruined the meal entirely. She spoke perfect English but pretended not to (after handing us English menus). She huffed and puffed when my wife asked her questions. She snatched the menus away and threw cutlery and food on the table. Meanwhile she was yukking it up with the French speaking customers, laughing and playfully swatting at guests.

I don't know if she objected to us being American, us not speaking French, or us being chinois. But really inappropriate service.

Simple Alsatian fare served quickly. Excellent LIVE JAZZ!! If you feel an earthquake, it's probably the Metro.

One of my favourite places to eat in Paris. Bec rouge stands for the stork's beak, which means the food is majorly Alsatian. A small but very well-thought menu, that tastes almost as good as my mother's cooking ! I really feel at home, thanks to the really friendly, laid-back service, and good old dishes. Food and wine are great. As for prices, you can get starter + main course or main course + dessert for 23EUR, or starter + main course + dessert for 27EUR -- and it is worth it.
On top of that, the place sells takeaway homemade foie gras -- delicious !
