The George Inn

Had dinner in one of London's oldest pubs built in 1676. Place was packed on a Friday night but upstairs in the restaurant it was another world. Traditional British classics including fish and chips followed by apple pie and custard. Both delicious. Great service and all round experience.

As the oldest galleried inn in England this is a must for more than this!!! Super cute indoor and out!
Shakespeare, Dickens amongst others frequented here ... I can just imagine what they would be talking about!

It said pork belly on it and I figured it was bacon... no a full slab of deep fried pork belly that was a meal in itself!!!
The fries were the BEST FRIES IN LONDON as well!

To top it off the Coca Cola was cold and perfectly mixed from the fountain!

A MUST eat!!!!!

I did have high expectations for this place however the George Inn left much to be desired.

I'll start with the good. - we were able to find a place to sit upstairs, there is a lot of area to work with. As well as we were excited to get to be in one of the oldest pubs in the city.

Reasons I gave less stars
1. The food was just ok. It doesn't make a place not worth trying or bad, and after eating at many other pubs in London this place didn't measure up

2. The bathrooms were not clean

3. Over all service and an order discrepancy.
You have to order down at the bar and use your table number. This is not an issue but it is helpful if this is more obvious or told to you by the staff that is around the area.

Issue with order - we dined on a Sunday and I was wanting the roast. I had my partner order for me and he ordered "the 28 day sirloin" as it was writer. On the menu. When I got my meal it was not that I had been given the sirloin steak. I went to ask if I could please exchange for the roast as that was what we ordered. The staff helping stated we should have said "Sunday roast" if I wanted the roast. Even though I did show her how the item appeared on the menu exactly how we ordered it.

I asked to get a new one. It was stated it would take a long time and my table would probably be done eating. I asked for a to go box and she told
Me she didn't have any. As well as this item cost 3£ more then the original item.

I told her I would just keep my original food and when I returned to the table someone had removed it. I went back to ask and they handed me the plate from the kitchen, this time one of the onion rings was missing from the plate.

My experience overall was not the best, but the pub was cute. I was very surprised how the issue was handled from a customer service standpoint and really hope that is not the way things are conducted regularly.

Service is extremely slow, we waited more than an hour and half to get our food. We were in the Stable section. Also no table service whatsoever on a Wednesday night. Maybe they do it on purpose to get you to drink more... Anyway v sour taste.

Stopped in here because we had a party of 20 and they were the only ones who could accommodate us. I started out with a pint of lager and moved onto their signature pork belly dish. Boy what a pleasant surprise! The pork belly was seared nicely and there was a good fat to meat ratio. It sat on top of a bed of potatoes and cabbage and there was a nice tasting gravy. Others had the fish and chips which was also cooked well and tasted good also. I would come back again for the food. The beer situation could also be improved as they have the pub downstairs which has a much larger selection that isn't available in the restaurant.

Really enjoyed my visit here. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the cheese toastie which was lovely. We shared the chicken shared between us and it was enjoyed all around. The staff were all lovely and helpful. The restaurant itself was very clean, the toilets were also very clean. Would 100% come back here again.

There's a shortcut to get into the back of The George; it's a small tunnel off of Borough High Street that leads to White Hart Yard, a small alleyway. There's a sign in the tunnel for "The George".
This entrance leads to an expanded section of The George (it seems to be run by the same company now, but it's possible it's another business that's just blatantly stealing the name) that was formerly the Heeltap Sports bar. It shares the main courtyard with The George, but it's basically just some extra space and the service bar for the tables in the courtyard. We were tired so we just sat here. They have a limited menu and no service (we had to order food from the bar). It's a generic space that's pretty empty and not historic or interesting (like the main section of The George Inn) that's on the other side of the Courtyard.
If you see the sign in the tunnel just keep walking. The main entrance is just a few more stores down. This is where the much more interesting and historic section of the restaurant is and is probably where you want to eat.

I'd rate the George Inn four and a half stars. Great courtyard. Came during a PL match and it was packed here. Few beers on cask plus some draft, came during a very busy time but the lines moved well.

We'd been here once - last December - and I had good memories of a lovely old space, lovingly preserved, with period charm galore.

My husband remembered that they didn't have Guinness, and was growly about that, but when we popped in yesterday it was raining pretty hard, and he just wanted to get into the warm and dry. I peeped through the window and, lo! A Guinness tap! So... maybe this would be a better experience?

We walked in to randomness and chaos in the bar we entered. The pub is arranged discontinuously on the ground floor, with a couple of separate bars/serving areas. The one we were in was staffed quite shambolically, with 3 folks behind the bar barely able to keep up with the 6 or 8 patrons queuing patiently for a drink.

While I waited, a manager type wandered back and forth with his key card, touching it computer screens and mumbling about something something inventory, while the woman on the side of the bar I was waiting at somehow disconnected the pay point. While she in her words "unfucked the payment system," I moved to the other side of the bar, where the other bartender ignored me.

Between one thing and another we finally got our order, and it was... well, you can't really f*ck up a gin and tonic (except - served with a slice of orange? not a lime? really?) but WHOOOOOOOO BOY can you screw up a Guinness.

Served in the wrong glass. Poured incorrectly. Tasting of metal and bacteria. Absolutely minging and completely undrinkable.

We did find a place to sit, and again, the bar is charming as all get-out... but the service is dreadful and slapdash and deeply uncaring and off-putting, and the Guinness was a horror show, so we won't be going back.

Near Borough Market. Great atmosphere. Bar has existed since 1600s. Lots of carved wood panels and bar. Just stopped for drinks after spending a few hours walking around the market. Refreshments hit the spot. They serve pub food that looked very good. Customers obtain drinks and order food at the bar. Drinks are prepared at the time of order and food is brought to table when ready.
